Matthew Linton

With deep expertise across space law, regulation, artificial intelligence, and public policy, I provide strategic legal and business counsel to companies of all sizes—from early-stage ventures to mature corporations. I specialize in guiding organizations through the complex legal and regulatory landscape of the rapidly evolving space industry, helping them scale into high-performing enterprises that execute critical national security and commercial missions. My approach is collaborative and solutions-driven, ensuring compliance while fostering innovation and strong partnerships with government stakeholders. I deliver tailored legal strategies aligned with client objectives, drawing on extensive experience in both national security and commercial space operations.

Most recently, as Chief Legal Officer at True Anomaly, a cutting-edge national security space startup, I established the company’s legal function from the ground up. I played a central role in multiple successful funding rounds, led regulatory engagement with agencies including the FCC, NOAA, and DoD, and structured key government contracts. My work emphasized regulatory strategy and legal diplomacy, enabling the execution of novel and transformative space missions.

Before joining True Anomaly, I served as Associate General Counsel for Operations at Lockheed Martin Space, where I advised on a wide range of matters including regulatory compliance, risk assessment and mitigation, crisis response, environmental and workplace safety, whistleblower investigations, pandemic law, privacy, space law and policy, security and counterintelligence, government contracts, and commercial agreements.

Earlier in my career, I practiced at two national law firms and worked in the federal government at the U.S. Department of Labor, where I prosecuted civil regulatory violations in workplace safety and health nationwide. I began my legal career as an appellate law clerk for Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey of the Colorado Supreme Court from 2006 to 2007.

I’ve been recognized as a Colorado Super Lawyers “Rising Star” and received the U.S. Department of Labor Secretary’s Exceptional Achievement Award for my work related to a major mining disaster. I was also honored to serve as the inaugural chair of the Colorado Lawyers Committee Young Lawyers Division, a nonpartisan group of more than 60 law firms committed to advancing opportunities for children, underserved communities, and the poor through advocacy and litigation. At Lockheed Martin Space, I was recognized with awards for Exceptional Service (2022) and Teamwork (2021), and received a Lockheed Martin Corporate NOVA Award for Teamwork as part of the COVID-19 Task Force in 2021.

I hold a Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, magna cum laude, from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

I grew up ski racing in the mountain towns of Colorado and California and now enjoy skiing, hiking, and travel trailering with my wife and two children and our dog Alice (pictured to the right).
